The most popular shopping area in San Francisco is Union Square. Many major department stores and national and international chains have stores in this area, so if shopping is your goal, you'll have an endless supply of stores. This is such a popular spot for shopping that it continues to attract residents from the suburbs. The stores are so much more concentrated and better here than anywhere else in the Bay Area.
There are entrances into the park area and pedestrians can walk the periphery along Powell and Post streets. Stairs also connect Maiden Lane with the square. There are more places for people to sit, as well. Along Geary Street, three tiers of grass with benches and concrete ledges offer respite for shoppers or attract locals on lunch break who want a place to sit, read, and eat. Steps, benches, and ledges in the center of Union Square are all being used, mainly by locals, who can enjoy the view of the Canary Island date palms fringing the park.
This is also San Francisco's main theater district, where traveling Broadway and off-Broadway shows come to town, usually for limited runs. Some of the theaters present local productions, as well.
